The Kamloops RCMP Detachment responded to approximately 490 calls for service from Friday Sept. 1 to 9 a.m. on Tuesday Sept. 5, 2023. Below are some highlights from those reports.

Indecent act

A report of a man exposing himself in the park and behaving indecently led to an arrest Friday afternoon.

On Sept. 1, 2023, around 1:30 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers attended Parkcrest Avenue and Singh Street in response to the report, where they located an intoxicated man inside the washroom, engaged in an indecent act, with the stall door open.

The man was arrested and lodged in cells until sober, then released pending the investigation’s conclusion.

Barricaded man arrested

An intoxicated man was released with conditions and a court date, related to a mischief on College Drive.

On Friday Sept. 1, 2023, Kamloops RCMP frontline officers received a report of a man barricaded inside a building’s closet. Numerous officers responded and located an intoxicated man who was suffering from paranoia and refused to exit. Police breached the door and located the suspect inside the ceiling’s HVAC system. He was taken into custody and lodged in cells.

The man was released with a court date and conditions once sober. Charge recommendation is anticipated as part of the assessment and approval process.

Stolen vehicle recovered following collision with bear

Police are investigating after a stolen vehicle collided with a bear carcass, kept driving, and ended up in flames early Saturday morning.

On Sept. 2, 2023, around 1:45 a.m. members of the Kamloops RCMP Crime Reduction Unit were investigating a suspected stolen car, when it sped away from them and collided with a bear on Hwy 5, then continued on despite considerable damage to the vehicle.

Soon after, officers observed the vehicle engulfed in flames on the frontage road in Rayleigh, and confirmed it to be a Mazda stolen from a business on Aug. 19, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.

A suspect was located nearby and arrested, then released, pending further investigation.

Found bones suspected to be historical

An eroded riverbank led to the discovery of bones this weekend, suspected to be human and archeological in nature.

On Sept. 2, 2023, around 6:15 p.m., a person was walking along the Thompson River, when they observed what appeared to be human bones imbedded in the clay bank near the water’s edge. Police attended and received the assistance of the BC Coroners Service and its anthropologist. The area was briefly closed to the public as part of the investigation.

Based on the preliminary findings, the bones are believed to be human and archeological in nature at this time, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.

Police and the BC Coroners Service are conducting concurrent investigations. Anyone with information or who comes across any bones suspected to be human, is asked to please contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000.

Stolen vehicle suspect held in custody

Two people were arrested on Sunday during a stolen vehicle investigation that also evolved into a flight from police occurrence.

On Sept. 3, 2023, around 8:35 a.m., the Kamloops RCMP Detachment received a report of a white Ford Expedition stolen from Athabasca Street East the night before. Around 10 a.m., a frontline officer was patrolling the area when she observed the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it on Victoria Street.

Upon seeing police lights, the driver allegedly accelerated away from the officer – ran a red light at Victoria Street at 2nd Avenue and briefly drove into oncoming traffic, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson. Thankfully, no one else on the roadway was struck and the vehicle and its occupants were located stationary on Lorne Street, with two young puppies in their possession.

A man and a woman were arrested, and the puppies were taken into the care of Community Service Officers for safekeeping and further investigation. Both suspects were held for a bail hearing. The man received a release order and a court date for Sept. 21; the woman was remanded in custody, to appear in court on Sept. 5, 2023.

Officer assaulted during apprehension

Responding to a report of a man acting erratically led to a police officer being assaulted during a Mental Health Act apprehension yesterday.

On Monday Sept. 4, 2023, around 1:50 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers received a request to check the well-being of a man who was foaming at the mouth and screaming at passing vehicles on the 2700-block of Tranquille Road. Police located the man and advised him that he was being apprehended under the Mental Health Act, but he refused to follow instructions and continued to walk into traffic.

The officer attempted to pull the man out of traffic and during the interaction, was struck in the head, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP Detachment spokesperson.

The man was soon after secured in custody and taken to the hospital for assessment and care. Once cleared medically, he was lodged in cells until sober. Charge recommendation is anticipated.

The officer was examined at scene by ambulance for minor injuries.

Break and enter at a business

Police are on the lookout for a red Ford truck that was stolen during a break-in on Monday night.

On Sept. 4, 2023, around 9:45 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers received a report of an alarm at a commercial location on Whittner Road. Officers attended and cleared the scene, confirming the culprits had fled in a red Ford F550, with an aluminum checkered pattern.

Attempted robbery

Kamloops RCMP officers are investigating a reported robbery attempt in Sahali last night.

On Sept. 4, 2023, around 11:10 p.m., police were called to a business on the 900-block of Columbia Street West where a customer reported someone had pulled a knife out and said something to her. The suspect was described as a Caucasian male, wearing a grey hooding, black backpack, and blue jeans.
