The Kamloops RCMP Detachment responded to approximately 326 calls for service from Friday Oct. 20 to 9 a.m. on Monday Oct. 23, 2023. Below are some highlights from those reports.
Motor vehicle incident
2023-38161
A portion of the highway was closed and a surrounding neighbourhood lost power Sunday evening when a vehicle collided with a hydro pole.
On Oct. 22, 2023, around 7:50 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers were called to Hwy. 1 East near Grand Boulevard, for a report of an SUV that had left the roadway and struck a power pole, causing live wires to fall. A portion of the eastbound section was closed while first responders and BC Hydro attended.
The vehicle’s lone occupant was uninjured. He was issued a violation ticket for having no licence. The highway was reopened shortly after.
Flight from police

A vehicle that fled from police was later located crashed and abandoned on Sunday night.
On Oct. 22, 2023, around 11:25 p.m., a Kamloops RCMP frontline officer conducted a vehicle stop on an early 2000s model Nissan Altima. As the officer approached the vehicle, its driver fled northbound on the Yellowhead Highway bridge from the westbound lanes of the East Trans Canada Highway.
Police did not pursue the vehicle, but located it again about 10 minutes later when it crashed into a tree at River Street and 10th Avenue. A person was detained nearby as part of the investigation and later released.

Arson report in Valleyview

Responding to a report of an abandoned 911 call Sunday morning led to an arrest for arson.
On Oct. 22, 2023, just before noon, Kamloops RCMP frontline officers attended the 2700-block of Valleyview Drive, where a fire had allegedly been started inside. Kamloops Fire and Rescue extinguished the blaze, which damaged the home’s interior. No one inside was injured.
A woman was arrested as part of the investigation. She received a date court and conditions, with charge recommendations anticipated as part of the assessment and approval process.

Impaired driver

Police attended a vehicle collision this weekend and ended up taking an impaired driver into custody.
On Oct. 22, 2023, around 2:20 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers were called to the Yellowhead Highway off-ramp and the East Trans Canada Highway, where a man had allegedly crashed a sports car, then fled on foot. Police located a suspect nearby and as part of the investigation, demanded a roadside breath test.
An immediate roadside prohibition was issued for refusal, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days, as per the Motor Vehicle Act. The man was lodged in cells to sober up safely.
Overlander Bridge closure: man apprehended

The Overlander Bridge was briefly closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic Saturday afternoon while police responded to a report of a man experiencing a mental health crisis.
On Oct. 21, 2023, around 4:35 p.m., police attended the bridge in response to the report. While frontline officers attempted to deescalate the situation, a number of RCMP support units, including the Southeast District Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Service Unit, were deployed to the area. The Kamloops Fire and Rescue Service was also positioned under the bridge.
Around 6 p.m., the man was safely apprehended under the Mental Health Act and immediately transported to the hospital for assessment and care.
Break and enter and auto theft

Kamloops police officers are looking for a suspect after a man broke into a suite, and later fled in a vehicle reported as stolen.
On Oct. 21, 2023, around 10:30 a.m., police were called to a commercial address on 11th Street, where a man had allegedly broken into a unit, defecated in a bathtub, then went to bed. The suspect fled in a blue Kia Sportage when a staff member knocked on the door around 10 a.m.
The Kia Sportage, BC license plate number MX775W, was later reported stolen out of Abbottsford.
The suspect was described as an Asian male in his 20s, 5’8 with a slim build, dressed in a light brown jacket or hoodie, dark brown pants, and black running shoes with white soles.

Stolen appliances

Several household appliances were stolen during a break-in on Hilltop Avenue this weekend.
On Oct. 21, 2023, around 11:10 a.m., the Kamloops RCMP Detachment received a report of a break-in at an unoccupied residential build. The culprit left behind trash and dirty clothes, and took a white Electrolux dryer, washer, and a stainless-steel Frigid Air Fridge.

Assault, weapons report

A man was taken into custody Friday night after police were called to the North Shore for a report that initially came in as an assault with a weapon.
On Oct. 20, 2023, around 7:20 p.m., police attended the area of Kent Avenue and Schubert Drive, where a man claimed to be assaulted by a suspect who was allegedly in possession of what appeared to be a firearm. As part of the investigation, officers arrested a suspect for offences related to assault, weapons possession, and breach.
