File # 2022-25992/25999

The Kamloops RCMP Detachment is looking to thank a civilian who came to the aid of an officer on Wednesday morning.

On July 27, 2022 at approximately 10:10 a.m., a Kamloops RCMP officer was responding to a check well-being request on the 1000-block of Westminster Avenue when he found himself requiring emergency police backup – and the person to arrive on scene first was a civilian nearby.

What came in as a standard complaint to check on a group of people allegedly using drugs and acting in a lewd manner, led to something much different when one of the men the officer was checking on left quickly, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson. Police checks confirmed the man had a warrant and the officer began patrolling the area to locate him.

When the officer found him in an alleyway on the 900-block of Tranquille Road and attempted to arrest him, the suspect allegedly became resistant, leading to a struggle that went to the ground. A nearby civilian came to the aid of the officer and helped secure the suspect until other police arrived.

The officer was alone at the time of the arrest and without the assistance of the civilian, the situation could have quickly gotten worse during the short time it took for other officers to locate him, added Cpl. Evelyn.

Unfortunately, the officer was unable to obtain the civilian’s name before he left the scene. The support provided to the officer was very much appreciated and the Kamloops RCMP Detachment would like to say thank you.

If you are or know who the Good Samaritan is, please contact Cpl. Evelyn at 250-828-3000 so that he may be thanked in person.
