File # 2020-41831

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Kamloops.

On December 19 just aft 8:30 p.m., Kamloops RCMP front line officers were called to a report of a shoplifter at a business in the 300-block of Tranquille Road in Kamloops. The store employee had locked the business’ door to prevent the man from leaving.

When police arrived, they found the man in possession of a weapon. Prior to officers being able to take him into custody he was injured with that weapon. Once in custody, officers provided first aid until ambulance could arrive.

BC Emergency Health Services transported the man to a local area hospital for treatment.

IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s injuries. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit its website at www.iiobc.ca
