The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Kamloops that resulted in injury to one man.

At approximately 11:20 p.m. on February 5, 2021 frontline officers from the Kamloops RCMP were called to Columbia Street and Pemberton Terrace, for a report that a man had allegedly thrown a rock at a car and was causing a disturbance by yelling and screaming in the street.

Officers located the man in the 400-block of Pemberton Terrace and attempted to take him into custody, however the man resisted and a conducted energy weapon was deployed. After being handcuffed, the man went into medical distress.

He was transported to a local area hospital by BC Emergency Health Services in serious condition.

IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s injuries. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
