File # 2021-11640

An infant is receiving necessary medical attention, after a partnership between police, health, and family services led to the newborn’s safe return to the hospital yesterday morning.

On April 14, 2021, just before 2 a.m., Kamloops RCMP received information from Interior Health regarding an infant who had been taken from the hospital against medical advice related to the baby’s survival.

The Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) authorized police to retrieve the baby, due to concerns for the infant’s life.

Kamloops RCMP frontline officers located and stopped the vehicle, then provided medical assistance to the infant until BC Emergency Health Services arrived shortly after.

Thanks to the partnership between police, Interior Health, MCFD, and the BC Emergency Health Services, the newborn was located and safely returned to the medical facility, as required to help assist in the infant’s survival, said Constable Crystal Evelyn, spokesperson for the Kamloops RCMP. At last check, the baby was in stable condition and the appropriate family supports were engaged.

The police investigation into the infant’s removal from the hospital is ongoing. No further information will be released.
