Threats against Kamloops police end with safe apprehension

A high-risk situation that led Kamloops police into Ashcroft Tuesday night, ended with one person being safely taken into custody.

On April 13, 2021, just before 10 p.m., Kamloops RCMP received a threat allegedly directed specifically at police. During their investigation, frontline officers were able to identify a suspect as a distraught man in the Ashcroft area, who was previously known to police and believed to potentially have access to numerous firearms.

Kamloops RCMP assembled a team, which included the Police Dog Services unit, to assist the Ashcroft RCMP Detachment in responding to the high-risk situation. After surrounding an apartment complex, police were able to make contact with the suspect and negotiate a safe surrender.

One person was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and immediately taken to hospital for medical assessment and care. No charges are being recommended at this time.
