File # 2024-2301

The Kamloops RCMP Detachment is asking the public for more information, after a youth reported being approached by a man in a vehicle yesterday afternoon.

On Jan. 23, 2024, around 3:20 p.m., Kamloops police received the report, which involved a youth walking home from school near the path on Greenstone Drive when a man in a black sedan asked them to get in the vehicle. The youth fled to a nearby business and called a safe adult.

No license plate was observed, but the vehicle was described as a four-door sedan with a broken back passenger window, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP Detachment spokesperson. The man was described as Caucasian, 30-40 years old, with a shaved beard.

Police are asking anyone with video surveillance or dash cam footage that may help identify the vehicle or its driver to please contact the detachment as soon as possible to help further the investigation.

In this report, the youth did everything right – they did not engage with the man and quickly fled to a nearby business, where they were able to make contact with someone they knew was a safe adult, said Corporal Dana Napier of the Community Policing Unit. As we work to further this investigation, we would like to encourage the public to review general street smarts: be aware of your surroundings, walk with a partner if possible, don’t engage with people you don’t know to be safe, and have those discussions about what to do if you are approached.

Anyone with information can call the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-2301.
