File # 2020-3079

On Friday July 10, 2020 at 10:11 p.m., Kaslo RCMP received a request to assist BC Emergency Health Services who was responding to a report of a marine incident on Kootenay Lake near the Harrop Cable Ferry in Balfour BC.

Police were told that a boat had just collided with a light house north of the ferry terminal, and that at least one individual was still in the water. Kaslo RCMP immediately initiated a call out to Kaslo Search and Rescue for support. While on route to the scene, BC Emergency Health Services updated RCMP that all boat occupants had now made it ashore and were accounted for. As such, RCMP cancelled the attendance of search and rescue crews.

Police learned that an area resident had transported all the occupants off the water and secured the damaged vessel to prevent it from drifting away.

The police investigation into the incident continues at this time. However, preliminary findings suggest that lighting conditions at the time and possibly alcohol were each contributing factors in this crash, which could have had a deadly outcome.
