Chetwynd RCMP investigate two vehicle collision

A head-on collision caused a closure of Highway 97 for several hours on Saturday as the investigation into the incident was undertaken by Chetwynd RCMP.

Just after 2 p.m. on January 2, 2021 frontline officers from the Chetwynd RCMP were called to a head on collision involving two pick-up trucks on Highway 97 near Willow Creek FSR. The caller reported at least one person was trapped inside a vehicle and both trucks had been rendered inoperable.

When officers arrived they found a 53-year-old woman from Victoria trapped inside a late model Chevrolet Colorado pick-up and a 52-year-old man, also from Victoria, outside the vehicle being tended to by passer-bys. Both were seriously injured. The female passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle by the fire department.

The driver of the second vehicle, a late model F150, suffered minor injuries while the passenger suffered serious injuries, both women in are in their thirties and from Fort St. John.

The occupants of both vehicles were transported to a local area hospital by Emergency Health Services.

The cause of the collision has yet to be determined and remains under investigation, however road conditions are believed to have been a contributing factor.
