Residential fire:

The Kitimat RCMP was called to assist with a residential fire on Plover Street, Kitimat BC on May 25th. There were no injuries reported during this incident. The investigation into this fire is ongoing. If you have any information, please contact the Kitimat RCMP at 250-632-7111 and cite file number 2023-1842.

Motor vehicle collisions:

A report of a vehicle colliding with a power pole on Alexander Ave, Kitimat, BC was received by the Kitimat RCMP on May 26th, 2023. The vehicle airbags were deployed and two occupants were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. (2023-1849) A second collision was reported to the Kitimat RCMP later on the evening on May 26th. It was reported the operator of a motorcycle had lost control of their bike along North Lahakas Blvd in Kitimat BC. The rider was also taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. The investigation into this collision is still on going. (2023-1854)

Impaired driving:

On May 27th, 2023, three impaired drivers were taken off the streets of Kitimat. During the afternoon, the manner a vehicle was being operated on South Lahakas concerned several people who contacted the Kitimat RCMP. The vehicle was located with the driver passed out behind the wheel. An investigation into impaired driving was conducted and it was found the driver was intoxicated by drugs. A 24-hour driving prohibition was issued. (2023-1862) Later in the evening, while on routine patrol, a Kitimat RCMP officers’ attention was a drawn to a vehicle after observing a traffic offence. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was investigated for impaired driving. After failing a road side breath test, a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition was issued. The vehicle was also impounded for 30 days. (2023-1868) A few hours later, another traffic stop resulted in the investigation of impaired driver. This driver provided a sample of their breath resulting in the driver receiving a 24-hour driving prohibition and the vehicle being towed. (2023-1871)

Broken window:

On May 28th, a report of a broken window was received by the Kitimat RCMP. The owner of a residence on Moore Street, Kitimat BC, had found the front window broken by a rock. A Kitimat RCMP officer attended the scene and is currently investigating the mischief. The investigation includes collecting any CCTV footage from the neighborhood. If you have anything suspicious from the area on your CCTV, or witnessed anything, please contact the Kitimat RCMP at 250-632-7111 and cite file number 2023-1873.

Fishing trip interruption:

While fishing along the banks of the Kitimat River near the Haisla Bridge, during the morning of May 29th, 2023, a local resident found themselves face to face with a curious grizzly bear. Luckily, they were able to safely get away and up wind from the bear to a position they could contact the Kitimat RCMP to ask for help. A screen shot of the location on a map was provided and the responding officer was able to secure a boat to assist in removing the fisherman off the river bank. The bear was not observed by the officer assisting. BC Conservation service and Department of Fisheries and Ocean Officers also attended to investigate the bears behavior further. We’d like to thank the Kitimat Fish Hatchery staff for their assistance with the boat and escort for this incident. The Kitimat RCMP would like to remind residents that we live in very active bear country and to make sure you are aware of your surroundings and have the ability to protect yourself and request help if required. (2023-1890)

Spray-paint mischief:

The Kitimat RCMP received two complaints of spray-paint mischief that had occurred over night between May 29th and May 30th, 2023. In the first instance, several inappropriate / offensive words, comments and initials were located painted in red spray paint behind Charles Street and Lahakas Blvd. (2023-1903) Nearby, a second area that was painted with an inappropriate slur was reported, also in red paint. It is believed that these two incidents are related. (2023-1906) The investigation into these mischiefs is still ongoing. If you have any information, you can contact the Kitimat RCMP or, if you wish to remain anonymous, you can provide you information to Crime Stoppers at 1-8000-222-TIPS. If your information results in charges, you could receive a reward of up to $2000.

Construction zone reminder:

The Kitimat RCMP would like to remind drivers of the construction zone along Hailsa Blvd between Kuldo Blvd and 4th street. With the ongoing bridge replacement, the speed limit in that area is 30 Km/h and its imperative that vehicles are traveling that speed to ensure the safety of the construction workers and pedestrians. Enhanced patrols will be conducted.
