Bears in the neighborhood:

During the early morning hours of June 2nd, 2023, the Kitimat RCMP were advised of 2 grizzly bears around the Omenica Street neighborhood. There was a concern the bears would be getting into garbage, not leaving and people would be starting to move around walking and biking. If you note there is problem bears in your area please contact the BC Conservation Officers Service at 1-877-952-7277 with the information. Once again, the Kitimat RCMP would like to remind residents that we live in very active bear country and to make sure you are aware of your surroundings and have the ability to protect yourself and request help if required. Motor vehicle collision:

During the afternoon rush hour, on June 2nd, the Kitimat RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Lahakas Blvd south and Haisla Blvd in Kitimat BC. Investigation revealed that one vehicle had slowly moved up to stop at the stop line at the intersection, the second vehicle thought traffic was moving, however it stopped, causing a rear-ending incident. Information was exchanged between the drivers and one driver attended a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries. (2023-1959)

Spray-paint mischief:

A report of another spray-painted fence in the White Sail neighborhood of Kitimat BC was received on June 3rd, 2023. Black spray paint was used to make an inappropriate comment and picture. The responding officer conducted neighborhood enquires and checked for any cctv in the area. If you know of anyone causing this damage, please contact the Kitimat RCMP at 250-632-7111. If you would like to remain anonymous, you can report the information to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. If your information results in charges, you could receive a reward of up to $2000. Vehicle collision:

Emergency services were called to an incident that occurred on Highway 37, at Onion Lake on June 5th, 2023. It was reported that a vehicle had left the roadway and entered the lake. The investigation revealed that a citizen passing by had witnessed the incident, jumped into the water, removed the driver from the vehicle and preformed first aid until EHS arrived. Kitimat and Terrace Search and Rescue was dispatched to assist to ensure there was no other parties involved and retrieved the vehicle from the lake. The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The circumstances of the incident are still under investigation. (2023-2010)

Dirt bike collision:

During the early evening hours of June 5th, 2023, the Kitimat RCMP were dispatched to a collision between a vehicle and a dirt bike along the Kitimat River Dyke Road, in Kitimat BC. The investigation revealed that the vehicle was driving along Dyke road when a dirt bike came out from the tree line at a high rate of speed, running into the side of the vehicle. Luckily there was no injuries received as a result of the collision. The motorcycle operator was issued a violation ticket for operating an off-road vehicle not inured/registered and no drivers license, as Dyke Road is considered a highway under the British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act. Highway includes, every highway within the meaning of the Transportation Act, every road, street, lane or right of way designed or intended for or used by the general public for the passage of vehicles, and approaches and any other public way. The Kitimat RCMP would like to remind all off road vehicle users that you must have your vehicle registered and you must be familiar with the provincial laws which you can find at Off-Road Vehicles - Province of British Columbia (gov.bc.ca). Sextortion scam alert:

Another report of sextortion from a local resident was received by the Kitimat RCMP on June 6th, 2023. The victim reportedly sent intimate videos on a social media platform to someone they had only met online. The victim then began receiving threats to release the videos to friends and family if they didn’t pay. Scammers create fake profiles on social media and dating sites. They use these profiles to lure unsuspecting victims into a relationship and coerce them to perform sexual acts on camera or to send photos. Those sessions are recorded and the images are then used to extort further sexual imagery or money. Sending money is unlikely to make the threats stop. If you are the victim of sextortion, immediately block the suspect on all social media platforms and contact the police. You can learn more about these scams at cybertip.ca. (2023-2036)

Bear vs vehicle collision:

On June 7th, 2023, the Kitimat RCMP were advised of a collision between a bear and a vehicle along Highway 37, North of Kitimat BC. It was reported the bruin ran out of the ditch and into the path of the vehicle. The vehicle received minor damages and the bear continued to run back into the bushes. The Kitimat RCMP would like to remind drivers that wildlife is very active along our highways. Always stay aware and watch out for them. (2023-2041)
